Peace and its many aspects

The Charter for Compassion

Here is another really interesting initiative, called the Charter for Compassion. They are, imho, onto something extremely important, that I have mentioned a couple of times.  Religion has been the wellspring of culture and a great force for good; however, religion has also been associated with terrible tragedies and oppression.  So, might it not be time to sort this out, to get to the essence of what religions have in common:  those great universal spiritual values?  In this case, they are focusing on “compassion”.   Here are a few words of explanation from their “About” page:

“The Charter for Compassion is a collaborative effort to build a peaceful and harmonious global community. Bringing together the voices of people from all religions, the Charter seeks to remind the world that while all faiths are not the same, they all share the core principle of compassion and the Golden Rule. The Charter will change the tenor of the conversation around religion. It will be a clarion call to the world.”

First, check out the, well done, video on the page linked above to get an overview of what they want to do.  Then have a look at the “Write” page:   this is where it gets really interesting.  As explained:

“Over the next four weeks, everyone is invited to help write the Charter for Compassion. Please choose the active phase below, read the description, be inspired by the sample text, and share your own words or suggestions for that section of the Charter.”

They list eight dimensions of compassion and ask people to choose one and provide their own views.  If you look at the entries you will see that this is happening right now!  You too can participate and be part of the project to write the Charter.

On Dec. 4 (ie the day after tomorrow) the movement’s Council will use the input gathered here to craft the final version of the Charter.  Later, there will be large event at which religious leaders will sign on to the Charter.

Whatever the fate of this initiative, they are going about it in an innovative way:  stressing the universal, getting popular input and having a group of very credible experts craft the final version of the document.  I can see this being used to promote many other causes of importance to peace.
