Peace and its many aspects

New Noble Peace Laureate

As I hope you already know:

“The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2008 to Martti Ahtisaari for his important efforts, on several continents and over more than three decades, to resolve international conflicts. ” (Here is the full announcement from the Nobel Peace Prize site)

I would strongly encourage you to have a look at Mr. Ahtisaari’s Nobel lecture, delivered in Oslo on Dec. 10, 2008.  There are many important and interesting observations in this address, so I will only mention a few that I found confirming and encouraging.

“…there tends to be too much focus on the mediators. With that we are disempowering the parties to the conflict and creating the wrong impression that peace comes from the outside. The only people that can make peace are the parties to the conflict, and just as they are responsible for the conflict and its consequences, so should they be given responsibility and recognition for the peace.” (NOTE:  Mr. Ahtisaari was awarded the Prize for his activities as a mediator)

“Wars and conflicts are not inevitable. They are caused by human beings. There are always interests that are furthered by war. Therefore those who have power and influence can also stop them.”

“Peace is a question of will. All conflicts can be settled, and there are no excuses for allowing them to become eternal.”

I hope these few quotes have enticed you to read the whole lecture.
