Peace and its many aspects

A brief Christmas post

Happy holidays, etc…. 🙂

Since it is Christmas day I thought I would share something I’ve always found interesting.  The Christian world calls Jesus “The Prince of Peace”, seeing in him the fulfillment of this passage from Isaiah:

“For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given…
and his name will be called,
‘Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Is. 9.6)

And, of course, the Sermon on the Mount includes this timeless and sublime declaration about peacemakers:

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.” (Matthew 5:9)

So, there is a strong and clear association of Christ and Christianity with peace (which, as far as I’m concerned, is as it should be).

However, at the same time, we have this quote from Jesus:

“Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. ” (Matthew 10: 34)

If you go the Wikipedia article about this (and countelss other sources) you will see that there are many ways of interpreting this verse, and I am certainly not promoting one over the other.

Still, it has always interested me.

“And the eagle flies with the dove” (Crosby, Still and Nash)

P.S.  Check out google’s holiday image (note the peace sign):
