Democracy and Peace in 2010

Democracy Index 2010 just released

The 2010 Democracy Index, developed by the Economist Intelligence Unit, has just been released.

It shows a decline in democracy over the last 2 years. The Index correlates well with the Global Peace Index but one of its sub-components, the well-functioning of government, correlates even strongly with peace.

This is very interesting, for a number of reasons.  First, while democracy is considered a positive thing in and of itself (I’m not disagreeing), still it is a means to an end, and not an end in itself.  What is the “end”?  Well, I hope it is obvious that it is a certain quality of life which includes a peaceful and creative society.  So, certainly it is not surprising that there is a correlation between the Democracy Index and the Global Peace Index, but it also makes sense that the “well-functioning” of government is even more closely associated with peace.  After all, we live an an era when there are still quite a few “transitional” democracies who haven’t yet achieved all they should  in regard to “well functioning” (curious term 🙂 ).

Anyhow, it is great to see these measures put side by side and some conclusions drawn.  Once again, I think we can conclude that the direction in which we need to go is getting clearer.
